We bought our first goats from a breeder who, like many serious breeders who sell registered goats, named all of her goats before they were sold. That means we didn’t need to name any goats until our first babies were born a year later.
I had noticed that some breeders used themes to name their goats, so that’s what we did.
Our first set of twins were named Adam and Eve since they were the first people!
We named our first set of triplet bucks George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson.
The following year we decided to have a theme for every doe. All of her kids would be named along that theme. So Dancy’s kids all had musical names, such as Carmen (named after the opera) and Odette (named after a character in the ballet, Swan Lake).
Then Carmen’s kids were all named after operas. We named one of her does Lizzie Border because there is actually an opera about that outlaw. So it was easy to then decide to name all of Lizzie’s kids after outlaws. Did you know there was an outlaw named Sadie the Goat in New York City a century ago?
How do we come up with names for these complicated themes? I use Google a lot!
But maybe you just bought your first few goats and need some fun names for them. Once or twice a year on the Thrifty Homesteader Facebook page, I ask people for their favorite goat names, and like the post on chicken names, I realized I should collect the names on here so that people could access them anytime.
So, here you go! We’ve organized them into categories to make it a little easier for you to sort through the 500+ names that people have shared.

How cute! thanks for sharing!
Since we have a vineyard, all my goats are wine-type names. Light colored goats- whites and dark colored goats- reds. Syrah, Noir, Rosé, Riesling, Foch, Baco, Cab, Mueller… endless! Lol!!!
Beautiful names! Thanks for sharing!
We used to joke that our doeling should have been named Hoover for the way she inhales grain.. All her kids will be named after vacuum brands/models/inventors. Ninety plus options. Since this year’s buck’s lineage is all astrological, we’ve got Sunbeam and Cirrus.
I love it! I have a line that should have been named after vacuums!
We have a Bonnie(doe) and Clyde(buck). Then we have Rose, Lilly, Daisy, Jasmine, Violet, Hazel, Holly, Ivy, Iris, Magnolia and Zinnia. Our oldest buck is Poppy. Thank you for the list of names.
You’re welcome! And thank you for sharing the beautiful names of your goats.
I just got my first 3 goats for pasture management and am naming them after weeds –
Briar, Bramble and Buttercup!
Your list was very helpful!
Thank you. We’re glad you found the list helpful.
Love the funny names! They only one I have from the list is a Bonnie Blue, as she’s a blue roan. I name my kids after their mom’s first letter, Bonnie’s mom was Breezy Day (she was from another farm). Then I have, Jax, Austin, Iris (known as The Dink for her ity bitty size), Lincoln, Sabrina, and Alliekat. Sabrina’s kids were Scotty, Saffron, Sebastian, Simon, and Soji. Alliekat’s are Andrew, Astro, and Aron.
Thank you for sharing your story!
I named my first goats after Daedric princes from the Elder Scrolls, or other characters from the same theme. Our first buck was a black mix breed named Sithis, the 5 mixed breed does were Boethia, Meridia, Azura, Vaermina, and Namira. Sithis was unrualy and too feral, so we gave him to someone that wanted a creek goat to keep the brambles down around the banks. Then we bought Sanguine (aka Sam), a purebred Boer buck. Sam is a sweetheart except when he’s rutty. We don’t have a theme for naming kids, it’s just whatever comes to me. We kept Meridia’s daughter Pixy, and Azura’s daughter Faline. We bought an older Anglo Nubian doe earlier this year, Delhi, her doe kids born this year were named Cupcake and Cookie. We also bought 2 purebred Boer girls, Vivienne and Rhani, Vivienne has just had a son, Rhani is still a bit young to breed. We also kept Toffee, one of our first male kids that we castrated as a companion for Sam when we don’t want him in with the girls. Other kids born this year are Pogo and Bounce, Cocoa and Kreme, and Azura had quads, Casper, Oscar, Petra and Cintra. But we have bred so many goats over the years and named them all, I’m running out of ideas now. I was looking for inspiration to name Vivienne’s son, it has to be good because I’m thinking about keeping him to replace and retire Sam. Most of the kids are sold each year, so their names are less important and easier to come up with. Do I name him a Daedric name? Or do I find a new theme? Or just name him something random?
I really love having a theme based upon the dam because it makes it so easy to remember which doe is a goat’s mother without having to check the pedigree.
Yes could use some help in naming on of our goats she was born in January of 2023 and solid white with hint of grey and since I name her mom Dancy after my first goat Dancer and would like it to be similar to her mom Dancy any suggestions (pictures can be sent through e mail if possible)
We just bought our first ever goats, 3 Nubian kids. 2 males are white with small bits of black, and 1 black female. My first thought was a Peanuts theme Snoopy for white male with mostly black ears, Lucy for the black female, and (maybe) Charlie for the other white male. But since we got them to eat the underbrush, I thought (poison) Ivy, Mac (poison sumac), and Oakly (poison oak) all of which we have lol! Can’t decide! Please help and offer comments!
LOVE the underbrush names!! What a great theme 🙂

I named my newest (male) baby goat Speck. He’s small, he’s black with brown and spots. He has some white and has blue eyes. I think it’s unique and adorable.
Thanks for sharing with us !

We started with 1 which quickly became 8. Little Britches, Willow, Sweet Pea, Snickerdoodle, Milo, Matilda, Penelope. Just had new baby so I need a boy name. He’s black and white.
These are great!
Thanks for sharing with us 🙂

We’re getting our first three goats and have decided on Chaos and Hoover, the third name is still pending. We’re former military and have a ton respect for Secretary Mattis. I used to fly the S-3B Viking, affectionately called the War Hoover, former FBI agent, and they will be primarily used to help clean up invasive species overgrowth on the farm, so Hoover was a must!
These names are great!!! Thanks for sharing the story behind them 🙂
Tammy
we have two goats Tom Brady (because he’s the goat) and Sir Gruff Goat .
Thanks for sharing and growing the list of great goat names!
