500+ Funny Chicken Names

500 Funny Chicken Names

When we got our first 27 chickens in 2002, they were half buff Orpington and half silver-laced Wyandotte, so naming them was a bit of a challenge since so many of them looked alike. However, a few favorites soon emerged with personalities unique enough that we knew who they were.

Turns out, we chose the most common chicken names imaginable for them! A super sweet Wyandotte got the incredibly predictable name of Lacey. I thought we were being so clever, but since then have met many people who had a Lacey that was a silver-laced Wyandotte.

There was a buff Orpington hen that would watch me milk our only goat at the time, and I named her Ginger, in honor of her feather color, which reminded me of a jar of ground ginger.

And then there was Emerald, the king of the barnyard, a silver-laced Wyandotte rooster. His name seems super obvious if you’ve ever seen how those black spangle feathers glisten green in the sunlight.

Since those days, our naming ability has improved somewhat, but I am also in awe over the original, interesting, and funny chicken names that I’ve heard other people come up with!

A couple of times a year on my Thrifty Homesteader Facebook page, I’ll ask people to share their favorite chicken names. I always have a great laugh and think that I need to remember “that one” the next time I have a chicken who would be suited to that name.

Because I never remember the clever names, I went through those old posts and summarized them here for your convenience — and mine!

  1. My daughter named her hens after First Ladies. It’s a fun quiz to give people to see if they can guess how she named them.

  2. We live by Fort Knox and have 16 rescued roosters at our animal sanctuary. We call the main rooster area “Fort Cocks” and the roosters are named Major Tom, Captain Frizzle, Sgt Red, Sniper, GI Crow and General Tso! Two roosters (Eggton John & Coop Dog) are in with our ladies- Chickie Minaj, Janice Jop-hen, Stevie Chicks, Ri-hena, Dolly Part-hen, Tanya Clucker and the list goes on!

  3. My Ayam Cemani roo is Agamemnon. My Lavender Ameraucana roo’s are Alexander, Achilles and Apollo. My Ayam Cemani hens are Venus, Isis, Nefertiti, Delilah, Kali, and Midnight. I also have hens named Onyx, Opal, Obsidian, Ripley, Hera, Georgia and Grace. Cockrells I named Montezuma, Midas and Lancealot! Love this! Thanks for the info!

  4. We had a group of six chickens that were wild. They went into the coop and didn’t spend time in the house when little like most of mine did. My husband dubbed them the Compys after the Compsognathus in Jurassic Park because they acted like them—bobbing head, scattering when approached, looking at us as if we were food, etc.

  5. Oh my goodness! I’m laughing so hard I’m crying! I can’t remember all the names our older kids had for our chickens, but they could name them all. I’ll have to ask them now! We did have some Indian Runner ducks that were quite comical. My husband called them The Committee! They always wandered around the yard together in a group having quite the conversation. I do remember a huge French Copper Maran roo whose name was Alpha. I was his Omega…..
We currently have a black Icelandic roo called Napoleon, a Beilefelder roo called Moto Moto and a Bielefelder hen named Gloria. Again our kids have them all named, but those were the only ones I had input for and I just can’t remember all their cute names… oh, our 8yo reminded me she has Christof, Anna and Sven…..
Thanks for the humor this morning!!!!!

  6. We named all of our first chickens after egg dishes: Florentine, Soufflé, Benedict, Frittata, Royale, Neptune, Huevos Rancheros, Migas, Meringue, Omelette, Quiche, Pickle(d was silent), and Fry. The rooster was named Bacon, and he was delicious!

  7. These names are great! I can’t really tell my hens apart so the rooster is the only one with a name and his is Beavis. He’s gorgeous!
I can share my duck names, though. I was given these ducks and the names came with them but I love them. The drake is named Paul Drake and the girls are Money Penny, Jane Mansfield, Mallory, Angela Lansbury. Mallory didn’t come with a last name but she looks like a female mallard so I guess that’s kinda obvious.

  8. We have barred rocks so we generally do not name the hens. However, we do name our rooster. It is Mr Clucky because they make so many different types of clucks, not just crowing. We will always have a Mr. Clucky because I love the name so much. We are on our second Mr. Clucky and he is a very good rooster. He definitely knows his name and responds when I call. I love having chickens!

  9. We have had many….

    The first round was:

    Stevie Chicks
    Annie Egg-ley
Henny Penny, the Australorpe, she would peck our front window when she was ready for bed, and had to be walked to the coop.
    and Goldie Hen

    Now we have:
    Wynona Peep
Owlivia Egg-ton-John (She looks like an owl, but she’s a Gold laced Wynodotte)
    Chickira
    Hennysuckle
    Dixie Chirp
    Yolkahontas
    and our Rooster: Axel Crowes

Plus the 5 baby Australorpes waiting for names….
